Household Budget Percentile Calculator
Enter your annual household expenditures by category. We compare your numbers to the five BLS Consumer Expenditure Survey income quintiles for 2024 and tell you which national group your spending most closely matches.
How this works
The Bureau of Labor Statistics splits American households into five equal-sized income quintiles each year through its Consumer Expenditure Survey. Each quintile contains roughly 25.4 million consumer units. We compare your category-level spending against the published 2024 averages for each quintile and identify the closest match.
The match is computed as a sum-of-squared-percentage-deviations across the four major categories. Lower is closer. We also report your housing, food, transportation, and healthcare share as a percentage of the quintile-average total.
